Murray-Jones

Yorta Yorta - Baraparapa

I studied at Art School in the mid 1970’s and majored in Printmaking. This was at Caulfield Institute now Monash University. I later resumed study at NIKERI doing Arts and Education Double Degree, Honours 1st class and later a PhD practice exegesis.

I have worked across many fields in my lifetime including fashion design, hospitality and later graphic design and audio visual work with Victorian College of Agriculture and Horticulture McMillan Campus.

I am a registered Secondary School Teacher in the areas of Art, Design, Performing Arts and Textiles.

Before coming to NIKERI in 2009 to Lecture, I was teaching in Gippsland for 10 years.

I have since this time lectured in Graphic Design and Visual Arts. I have exhibited extensively and work mainly in Oils on canvas. I also work in traditional Aboriginal grass weaving, which was taught to me by my Aunty Dot Peters.
I am currently working at NIKERI as a Cultural Mentor and Tutor with post graduate students. I have worked with the Geelong Gallery as a mentor for an emerging young Indigenous Curator. I have also made videos with the Gallery in relation to artworks in the collection.

I have worked with Surfcoast Shire as they have supported me in staging a solo exhibition with a cultural talk for around 100 participants. I have also been successful in obtaining an Artist’s Grant with two other artists which will come to fruition early to mid 2024. To date we have done artists talks in the community.

I am extremely interested in growing plants particularly bush tucker plants and other Indigenous flora. I continue to paint as I near retirement and intend to do so from here on.
